Syracuse roots

A Syracuse story,
since 1969.

Greg Tearney was a kid from Syracuse's 15th Ward when he started training. In 1969 he opened his own karate school, and it became one of the most respected dojos in Central New York.

His daughter, Kyoshi Alexis, leads the floor today at Township 5 in Camillus, just off West Genesee Street. The address says Camillus, but the families on the mat come from all over the Syracuse area: Fairmount and Solvay, the city's south and west sides, Onondaga Hill and Nedrow, Skaneateles and Marcellus, and as far east as Auburn.

They come for traditional Okinawan karate, taught slower than most and heavier on the basics. They also come for a family dojo where parents and grandparents can watch every class from the viewing area.
